Lighting Canoes is a site-specific installation along the Spadina Underpass in Toronto, transforming functional lighting into a work of art that illuminates both space and history. The installation replaces traditional underpass lighting with glowing blue canoes, symbolizing early modes of travel and evoking the waterfront that once covered this area. The blue light bathes the space, recalling a time when the land was underwater, while the canoe-shaped fixtures contrast with the modern Spadina roadways above. Accessible from the railway walking path, the underpass—once neglected—is now a vibrant corridor, enriched by colorful street art from local artists.
