Other Ways of Being is a biennale-as-book exploring narrative-driven design to reimagine the lost cultural heritage of Iraq’s Nineveh region. Marked by colonialism, war, and media distortion, the research examines orientalism, preservation, and speculative futures for Nimrud. It questions who owns history, who mourns its loss, and whether preservation is justified. Blending fact and fiction, it portrays cultural monuments across time—from their peak to their destruction and potential rebirth.Nimrud, a prime target of ISIS, has long suffered "slow violence"—the gradual devastation of war and climate change. Since the 19th century, excavations, looting, and museum acquisitions have depleted its artifacts, now scattered across 76 institutions. From auctions to plunder, the study explores how these forces might shape Nimrud’s afterlife through experimental design, institutional collaboration, and cultural regeneration in devastated spaces.
